I originally planned to come to Kyoto a few days later.
But my friend kept telling me,
“Come sooner. If you wait any longer, you’ll miss it.”
So I decided to arrive one day earlier.
The reason was this place — Goryukaku (Former Matsukaze Kaden Residence).
Built in 1921, it was originally the residence of Matsukaze Kaden, a Kyoto Kiyomizu ware merchant. It was designed by the renowned modern architect Goichi Takeda, and is one of the rare buildings in Kyoto that beautifully combines traditional Japanese and Western architectural styles.
Normally, only the café on the first floor is open to the public.
The second and third floors, as well as the observation tower at the top, are usually closed.
This year, as part of the “Kyoto Summer Special Opening” event, these areas have been opened to visitors for a limited time.
Inside, you’ll find beautifully preserved stained glass windows, elegant wooden staircases, and an observation room overlooking Kyoto’s Higashiyama district.
This special opening is available only until September 30, 2026.
If you’re planning a trip to Kyoto soon, it’s definitely worth adding to your itinerary.
You normally can’t go inside.
