📷 Travel Tips
Today I'm exploring Maiko Park in Kobe.
The first thing that catches your eye is, of course, the enormous Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. But as I walked closer to the waterfront, another building caught my attention—a pale green, octagonal structure with an unexpectedly nostalgic atmosphere.
This is Ijokaku, now home to the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
Ijokaku was built in 1915 as a seaside villa by Kobe-based Chinese merchant Wu Jintang. It opened to the public as the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in 1984, preserving materials related to Sun Yat-sen and his historical connections with Kobe. In 2001, the building itself was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
What I love most about this place is how two completely different eras appear in the same view.
Behind the historic Ijokaku rises the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, connecting Maiko in Kobe with Awaji Island. Construction began on site in 1988, and the bridge opened in 1998 after about ten years of work. It stretches 3,911 meters, with a central span of 1,991 meters between its two main towers.
There is also an extraordinary detail in its history. When the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake struck in 1995, the bridge was still under construction. Ground movement shifted the foundations and increased both the total length and central span by about one meter. Post-earthquake inspections found no major structural damage.
Walking along the waterfront here, you have a century-old building on one side and a massive modern suspension bridge on the other.
I just carried my camera, walked slowly, listened to the sea, and kept taking pictures.
This may be one of my favorite places to photograph the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
📷 Travel Tips
Walk around the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall to find an angle that places both Ijokaku and the bridge in the same frame. Maiko Park is only about a five-minute walk from JR Maiko Station or Sanyo Maiko-Koen Station.
